Mongering

Why do only certain types of things get mongered?

Why is it that scandal, gossip, scare and rumour can be mongered but truth, bravery and facts are not mongered?

You can be a Warmonger but not a peacemonger.

And of course you can also be a whoremonger.

But before you think it’s only negative things that are subject to mongering, there are some neutral things that are also subject to a mongery.

You can be a fishmonger but not a meatmonger.

Ironmonger is acceptable but not metalmonger or jewellerymonger.

Is there a monger committee that decides who gets to monger and who doesn’t?

I wondered about the origin of the word monger and consulted the Merriam Webster Dictionary.

Middle English mongere, from Old English mangere, from Latin mangon-, mango, of Greek origin; akin to Greek manganon charm, philtre

The Latin word means trader but when combined with the Greek word which hints a used-car salesman kind of patter, a monger becomes someone who deals in either not fully legit goods (war, scandal) or in a not fully legit way (the fishmonger trying to pass off not quite fresh fish perhaps).

In fact I think used car salesmen are definitely mongers.

Are there any other purveyors of goods or services you can think of who should be mongers?
