Is anybody still there?

It’s sad, but WordPress seems to be dying.

I log on now and fewer and fewer of the blogs I used to follow are being updated.

It is starting to feel like an echo chamber.

(I don’t know what an echo chamber actually is, but I imagine it’s somewhere empty where any sound reverberates off the empty walls.)

Which leads me into…

Things I don’t know

A short feature on things I do know but maybe should.

The names for different types of sushi. I know sashimi. But I don’t know my onigiri from my nigiri from … well, from any other names of sushi. Is this something I need to know?

How to play bridge. Happily I don’t live inside an Agatha Christie novel so this is not essential for my day to day life.

What’s in a Negroni. I’m not sure I ever drank a Negroni to know what’s in it. I don’t know what’s in a martini either but – points for me – I do know that a dirty martini has juice from the olive jar in it.

How a derivative works. This is probably a bit shameful as I work in finance but I don’t work in the kind of finance that deals with derivatives. I once sat next to a man at a Christmas party dinner who worked in derivatives and I made the mistake of saying, “I hear people talk about derivatives but I don’t know how they work.” He told me. All I can say is I’m glad there was wine on the table. (That may be why I can’t remember anything he said.)

I can tell you what I do know:

  • Most world capitals
  • Menu words in most major European languages
  • Bad swear words in Italian
  • How to say “Hello baby, how are you? Kiss kiss” in Hungarian. (FYI, this is because I used to sit near a Hungarian woman who called her children at least once a day.)

What do you know?

What don’t you know?

Are you bothered by what you don’t know?

I’m bothered by these ads.

  1. I know that an echo chamber (especially when referred to online) basically means everyone agreeing with each other, the right like to use it as an argument when you don’t want to engage with their ideology!

I know that the older I get, the less I actually know and it send me into a panic sometimes because I want to know and learn so much and so I need to be more picky about what I learn ie what is interesting/important to me because life is short.

I know that that ad is disturbing!

In regards to WordPress being a ghost town, I think that’s because of Substack, which just reminds me of the whole twenty tens blogging era and then that bubble burst when it got highly competitive and also people realised it’s a lot harder to make money as a blogger than people make out it is! I think I’m one of the few that actually switched from Substack to WordPress, hopefully I’ll get back to writing here on here soon, not that I have much to say right now.

I know that I enjoy your posts.

    Have a great weekend!

    1. Thanks for the positive feedback.

I have to say, I like WordPress more than Substack. I’m not planning to make money from my blog so maybe switching to Substack isn’t so important for me. I find WordPress easier to use to get an idea down and published quickly.
