Part 3 of the song challenge – my choices of song from a series of randomly selected categories.

13. A song you like from the 70s – Crazy Horses – The Osmonds
This is a great song! When this song comes up on one of my playlists, people ask “Who is this?” and are often gobsmacked to find out it’s the Osmonds. It’s so un-Osmondy in its glam rockiness, but it is very 70s and good fun. And the video just adds to it. The outfits! The co-ordinated dancing! Listen without prejudice and enjoy.
14. A song you’d love to be played at your wedding – Theme from Battlestar Galactica
If there had been an aisle for me to walk down, I would have picked this music to walk to. It’s brave and bold and sounds like you are heading off on a great journey, which is kind of what marriage is. And I would have been walking with the biggest smile on my face. No space for nerves here! Alas, there was no aisle walking in the registry office. And FYI, husband and I agreed if there had been an aisle to walk out on, we would have walked out to the theme from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
15. A song you like that’s a cover by another artist – The Pretenders – Stop Your Sobbing
I went through a bit of a Pretenders rediscovery a few years ago after reading Chrissie Hynde’s biography Reckless. I started listening to their early albums and found out along the way that this song is actually a cover of a Kinks song which I hadn’t realised before. It doesn’t make me like it less. A Ray Davies song will stand up to much covering (ref: Kirsty MacColl and Days).
16. A song that’s a classic favourite – Melanie – Brand New Key
Love this song. It’s cute and it’s probably not as innocent as it sounds. Is she really singing about a key for her roller skates?
I ride my bike, I roller skate, don’t drive no car
Don’t go too fast, but I go pretty far
For somebody who don’t drive I been all round the world
Some people say I done all right for a girl
17. A song you’d sing a duet with someone on karaoke – You Better You Bet – The Who
My first thought is something from a musical. Musicals have the best duets. In particular something from the musical Chess, but not the standard I Know Him So Well which I nearly sang with a friend in the talent show a school one year. Probably Mountain Duet, it’s a gorgeous falling in love song. I’ve only sung karaoke twice, and both those times in pairs. I sang Yellow Submarine and Walking on Sunshine but I wouldn’t recommend either of those. I think you could do this as a duet and make it fun. But probably only late at night after drinking heavily. Actually that is probably the best time to do karaoke full stop.
18. A song from the year you were born – Ride A White Swan – T-Rex
So now you know how old I am. Ah well, never mind. I love this song for it’s beautiful crazy hippy lyricism: “Wear a tall hat like a druid in the old days.” What? It’s got quite a stripped back sound but it’s … just… so… groovy! Every time I hear it I want to wear my hair long and put on my tattooed gown. Don’t you?
I’m always interested to hear what songs you would pick for these categories. Let me know in the comments.
